So this past weekend was Free Comic Book Day. This year I went to the Aw Yeah Comics store in Muncie, Indiana. This store is owned and operated by Christy Blanch and Mark Waid.
Now of course they had plenty of free comic books, with some of the latest titles such as: Archie, Bob’s Burger, Bongo comics, Civil War II, Serenity, Doctor Who, Suicide Squad, Attack on Titan, Awake, DC Super Hero Girls, and Gurmpy Cat, just to name a few. But they also included their neighbors in on the event, which I thought was fantastic.
Their first neighbor is Dan Downtown Records. First to be able to get you Suicide Squad comic, you had to go to Dan’s Downtown Records to pick it up, and once you are in there, you are definitely are going to want to look around, because they have some of the coolest records, that’s right I said records, around. Now I don’t know about you, but I am still a huge fan of records, Stairway to Heaven just has a whole better feel on a record, that you just can’t get from a CD or digital download. On top of the store just being down right awesome, they also brought an Elvis impersonator in, and he was just spot on. Many read their new comics, while listening to so good old rock and roll.
Speaking of rocking a roll, Studio Exhale also had an event that totally rocked. Studio Exhale and the Muncie Animal Shelter got together and had a Yoga with cats event. The two of them teaming up raised a little over $300.00 to help the animals in the animal shelter, and raise awareness that even our 4 legged fury friends need help to. It was so much fun.
Now of course the star of FCBD has to be the Aw Yeah Comic Store itself. On top of all the amazing free comics, also free capes for the kids, stickers, coloring pages, there was also so amazing talent creators there for everyone to meet.
Some of the guests there included Mark Waid, Gail Simone, Joshua Williamson, and Kyle Higgins. Now meeting Gail Simone was amazing, she has so many great stories about Australia, her adventures going to conventions, and just every day goofy stuff. She was amazing to meet, plus she did love my Princess Leia in her ceremonial gown cosplay outfit that I wore for FCBD. Of course Joshua Williamson and Kyle Higgins were also a treat, and of course it is always great to hang out with and harass Mark Waid.
They also had face painting courtesy of the Cornfed Derby Dames, music provided by Dan’s Downtown Records, and the 1966 Batmobile! The Batmobile stole the show. When the Batmobile rolled up, every child eyes lit up like lights on a Christmas tree.
But the true heroes of the day was the staff of Aw Yeah Comics Muncie. Christy, Mark, Kyle, Amber, and so many more people worked extremely hard to make sure everyone had a good time, their guests were well taken care of, and that the lines moved smoothly, and effectively.
So all and all I give FCBD at Aw Yeah Comics in Muncie a 15 out of 10. It is one of my favorite comic shops ever, and the fact the staff is so warm and inviting, and they truly know not only how to throw an event, but how to make it an event for the community speaks volumes about them.
